STAR after someone's name means Specialist in Talent Acquisition and Retention. It is the professional membership and certification for people who recruit inside an employer, awarded by The British Institute of Recruiters (BIOR), the professional body for UK recruitment founded in 2011. A person carrying the letters is a current STAR member; STAR Certified means they have also passed the STAR assessment. Anyone can check either in a minute at ior.org/verify.
What the letters stand for
STAR is written in full as Specialist in Talent Acquisition and Retention. It names the job it recognises. Talent acquisition is the hiring an employer does for itself, from the brief a hiring manager gives to the offer and the first day; retention is the part of the same work that keeps the person once they have started. STAR is for the people who do that work from inside the organisation, in-house recruiters, talent acquisition partners and leads, resourcing partners, heads of talent and the HR people who own hiring where nobody has the title recruiter. It is not for recruitment agencies, which have their own BIOR membership and certification.
Who awards it
The British Institute of Recruiters, a professional body for UK recruitment, Companies House 07575583, registered office in Manchester. BIOR is a professional body, not a regulator; UK recruitment has no statutory governing body. The Recruiter apprenticeship standard, ST1421 on Skills England, names STAR under professional recognition as the designation for in-house recruiters, alongside BIOR's Cert PRec for agency recruiters.
Member and Certified, the difference
STAR membership is the first step. A member can use the letters STAR while the membership is current, has a public verification page published by BIOR from the live record, and has the STAR shelf, the documents written for the in-house desk. STAR Certified is the second step, the member passes the STAR assessment, written against UK recruitment and employment law as it applies to the employer's side of hiring, and the verification page then shows STAR Certified with the date. Certification lasts five years and is then taken again, free. A STAR Team membership puts a whole talent acquisition team on one invoice, each person a STAR member in their own right.
How to check that STAR after a name is real
Open ior.org/verify and search the name or the membership number. The page is published by BIOR, not by the member, and shows Active or Lapsed, STAR or STAR Certified, and the dates. The STAR badge a member puts in an email signature or on a LinkedIn profile links to the same page and is drawn from the live record every time it is shown, so it changes the day a membership lapses. If a name does not appear, the person is not a current STAR member.
What STAR is not
It is not the STAR interview method (Situation, Task, Action, Result), which is a way of structuring an interview answer and has no awarding body. It is not an Ofqual-regulated qualification; BIOR's regulated qualifications are Cert PRec and Cert RRec, awarded through Summit Qualifications UK. It is not a chartered title. And it is not a trade association for employers; STAR belongs to the individual recruiter, and a STAR Team membership to the team.
What it costs and how to join
STAR membership is £120 a year for an individual, which includes the certification assessment, the verification page, the letters, the live badge and the STAR shelf. A team joins through STAR Team on one invoice, priced by the number of seats. The joining form is one screen at ior.org/star, and the first week is laid out step by step at ior.org/star-start-here.
